About the Error

When trying to access data on a disk drive that is installed and shared on an older Windows 95 network, the error message for code 106 may appear preventing you from accessing the data that you need from the shared disk drive.

Windows error code 106 is relevant to older Windows networked machines running Windows 95. Though these types of networks are older, they do exist in great numbers and this error can be an annoyance to users. The cause of the error has been known to be the SMS services on the network servers and has been acknowledged by Microsoft as a known error.

Here are some steps that you can take to resolve this error.

• Click on Start.
• Click on Shutdown.
• Choose Restart.
• Allow your computer ample time to restart and connect to the network.
• Try to access the information that is stored on the shared disk drive again.

You may be able to access the remote disk drive after doing this simple restart procedure.

If the problem persists, try these steps:

• Locate the System Management Software Compact Disk.
• Copy the file named Getdisk.ex, and rename it to Getdisk.exe.
• Copy the file you just created and paste it to the Sms\Site.srv\Maincfg.box\Client.src\X86.bin directory on the computer that is running SMS.
• This file will then be replicated to the other computers on the network.

This should resolve the issue.

If the problem still occurs, you may need to replace the physical disk drive or inspect it for hardware problems or a bad disk. Microsoft does not support these problems anymore, but you may be able to get additional information from the disk drive manufacturer. A replacement of the disk drive may be the quickest way to effectively resolve this issue.
