About the Error
The difficulty with this error code transpires whenever you start the Microsoft Exchange System Attendant on a PC connected to the Microsoft Exchange 2000 server. The error appears as Invalid Signature and can lead to other errors in the event log such as Data is Invalid, No such interface, or Could not start the the WWW Publishing Service.

Error code 80040002 is caused by problems with the metabase on a PC connected to a Microsoft Exchange 2000 Server. The IIS metabase can become damaged as the result of hardware problems, System 32 folder scan, or by a disruption from the power source. If the metabase has become corrupt it is necessary to restore the file from the backup system or reinstall the Internet Information Services (IIS) and Microsoft Exchange 2000.
To restore the metabase file from backup you will need to go through the following steps. Click on Start
on your toolbar and then choose Programs
. Click on Administrative Tools
and then choose Internet Services Manager
. Choose the name of the PC for Exchange 2000 and then click on Backup/Restore Configuration
located on the Action
menu. When the dialog box appears choose Metabase.bin
and then click on Restore
To reinstall Internet Information Services and Exchange 2000 it is necessary to backup the Mbdata folder which is located on the Exchange 2000 server. When you are ready to reinstall go back to the Metabase.bin file and rename it to Metabase.old
. Click on Start
on your main toolbar and choose Control Panel
from the pop-up menu. Click on Add/Remove Programs
and remove IIS and then reinstall it. To reinstall Microsoft Exchange return to Add/Remove Programs
and then click on Microsoft Exchange 2000
and then choose Change/Remove
. When the Microsoft Exchange Installation Wizard appears choose Next
. Click on Reinstall
in the Action column for each installed element and then follow the instructions to complete the process. Apply the Microsoft Exchange 2000 service packs and update and then restart Microsoft Exchange.
