You receive this error message when scanning for updates or downloading updates from the Microsoft Update website or the Windows Update website.

Windows code 80244019 - Repair instruction

The error can be caused if the Background Intelligent Transfer Service is turned off when you are trying to install updates or Automatic Updates is deactivated. Assuming that your PC is free of viruses and malware which can disable Automatic Updates you can proceed to check the configurations for Automatic Updates and the Background Intelligent Transfer services.

If you are using Windows XP click on Start on the main toolbar and then choose Run from the pop-up menu. Enter services.msc and then press the Enterkey. Choose Background Intelligent Transfer Service and when the Startup typewindow appears choose Manual and then click on Apply. Choose Log Onand then check to ensure that the BITS service is enabled and then choose General and click on Start. Choose Event Log and check to make sure that Automatic is set for Startup type. Choose Startif Startup statusindicates that it is deactivated. When you complete the process choose Automatic Update and make sure Automatic is selected under Startup type. Under Startup status choose Startif the program is not running and then click on OK.

If you are using Windows Vista you can click on Startand enter services.msc in the search box and then press the Enterkey. Choose services.msc from the list and then enter your password if necessary. Choose Background Intelligent Transfer Service and when the Startup type windows opens choose Manual and then click on Apply. Click on Log On and check to ensure BITS is enabled and then choose General and then click on Start. When you are finished choose Windows Event Logand make sure Automatic is set under Startup type. Check to ensure that the Startup statusis set to Start and then choose OK. Next you should choose the Windows Update service and check to ensure that Automatic is set under Startup type and then clickStart if Startup statusis disabled and then click on OK. Try to install updates again.
