Error 80072EFE appears when you see an update on the Windows Update website and you try to install it on your PC. As sson as you click to install the error prevents you from installing the update.

This type of issue can occur as the result a firewall which is preventing the install or if there are corrupt files or problems with the Catroot2 folder. There are a few troubleshooting steps you can take to try and resolve the error.
Initially you should try disabling the firewall you are using which could be blocking the Internet connection to Windows Update website. This may be a third party firewall you are using other than Windows firewall such as Zone Alarm, Norton, or other. You can read the help section of your firewall provider to discover how to disable it. Once you disable the firewall try to install updates and then make sure you enable the firewall when you are finished.
If you are still receiving the error you can try deleting the Catroot2 folder which is where Windows stores cab files. Click on Start
on the main toolbar and then choose Run
from the menu. When the command prompt opens enter services.msc
and then press the Enter
key. When the services window opens locate Cryptographic Service
and double click on it and then choose Stop
. Next it is necessary to delete the Catroot2 folder. Click on Start
on the main toolbar and then choose MyComputer
from the menu. When the new window opens click on C drive
and then choose the Windows
folder. Double click on the System32
folder and then locate the Catroot2 folder
. Right click on it and then click Delete
. Last, it is necessary to restart Cryptographic Services by clicking on Start
on the main toolbar. Choose Run
from the pop up menu and then enter services.msc
and press the Enter
Cryptographic Services from the list and double click on it and choose Start
. Try to install updates again.
