You receive this error message when you try to access the Windows Update or Microsoft Update website to try and download updates.
Before you use a few troubleshooting techniques to try and correct this error it is important to note that the error can be caused by a problem in communications between your PC and the Windows Update or Microsoft Update website. Sometimes you can resolve the issue by signing out of Windows Update, waiting a few minutes, and then try to install updates again. If you cannot resolve the issue this way then you can move to a few troubleshooting steps.
You can try to resolve the error by checking to make sure that Windows Firewall is activated. If you are running Windows XP, click on Start
on the main toolbar and then choose Run
from the menu. When the command prompt appears enter firewall.cpl
and then press the Enter
key. When the new window opens choose General
and check to ensure that the radio button next to On
is selected and then click on OK
. If you are running Windows Vista or Windows 7, click on Start
on the main toolbar and then choose Control Panel
from the menu. When the Control Panel window opens click on Security
and then choose Windows Firewall
.Click on Turn Windows Firewall on or off
and enter your password if you are prompted to do so and then choose On
and click OK
You will also need to disable the third-party firewall. It is important to note you must use you judgment when performing this step because it can make your PC vulnerable to malicious software. If you are running Windows Vista click on Start
on the main toolbar and then choose Control
panel from the menu. When the Control Panel window opens choose Security
and then click on Security Center
. Enter your password if you are prompted to do so and check to ensure Control Panel Home
is selected. For the third party firewall you are using the steps will vary here. Click on Firewall
to review the firewall status note for the specific firewall application you are using and check to see if it is turned on. Open the firewall and then disable it temporarily and try to install updates again. Remember to enable the firewall again when you are finished installing updates.
