This Windows Update error appears in Windows Vista. When the update window appears on the taskbar and you click on it the error message is displayed.


If you are trying to install updates in Windows Vista you may receive this error which can be caused by problems with the Windows Updates Service, Windows Modules Installer, or the Background Intelligent Transfer Service. There are a few different methods you can use to solve this error problem.

You can try resetting Windows Update by discontinuing the Background Intelligent Transfer Service and Automatic Updates. You can accomplish this by clicking on Start, choosing All Programs, and then choose Accessories. When the menu appears right click on the Command Promptfeature and then choose Run as Administrator. When the User Account Control prompt appears click on Continue. When the Command Prompt box appears enter net stop wuauservand then press the Enter key. Open the Command Prompt again and type in net stop bits and then press the Enterkey. This will discontinue both BIT and Automatic Updates.

It is also necessary to rename the folders associated with the Background Intelligent Transfer Service and the Automatic Update service. To do this type innet stop cryptsvcin the Command Prompt and then press the Enterkey. Open the Command Prompt again and enter ren %systemroot%\System32\Catroot2 oldcatroot2and then press the Enter key. Follow the same procedure by typing ren %systemroot%\SoftwareDistribution SoftwareDistribution.oldand then pressing the Enter key. Open the Command Prompt again and enter net start cryptsvcand press the Enterkey.

Now you have to register the necessary files for both Windows Update and Microsoft Update. You can do this by opening the Command Prompt and then entering regsvr32 wuapi.dlland pressing the Enterkey. Follow the exact same procedure for entering the following files:regsvr32 wuaueng.dll, regsvr32 wucltux.dll, regsvr32 wups2.dll, regsvr32 wups.dll, and regsvr32 wuwebv.dll.

Last you will need to restart BITS, Automatic Updates, and the Event Log. You do this by opening the Command Promptand entering net start bitsand then pressing the Enterkey. Then proceed to enter net start wuauservand press the Enter key, and then enter net start eventlog, press the Enterkey and then close the program. Reboot your PC and then try running Windows update again.
