Windows error code 67 can be solved. Check out our guide for troubleshooting the error code and how to prevent it from coming back in the future.

The Problem

When you try to connect to another computer on your network or a server, like a file server that is not online or is experiencing communication problems due to a network error or lock up, you will see Windows error code 67 displayed.

Network, server or computer problems can cause a network resource’s name to be unrecognizable when your computer tries to access it. There could be several underlying reasons why this error occurs, but these basic steps should be followed first to troubleshoot/resolve this error.

Please note that these steps, while not advanced, do involve the registry on your computer. Be sure that you understand the implications and get an experienced computer operator to help if you do not feel confident about taking these steps.

  • Click on the Start Button, then click Run and type in regedit and click on OK.
  • Look in the left pane for the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\NetBT\Parameters key.
  • Click on that key and in the right pane double-click on Lmhosts Timeout, put in a value larger than the current one in the Value data box and then click OK.
  • Close the Windows Registry Editor.
  • Restart your computer.
  • After your computer is online again, try to access the network resource.

These steps will usually resolve the Windows error code 67 problem. If this does not work, or if you are unable to locate the registry key mentioned above, contact your systems administrator or a network technician to assist with the issue.

Some computers will not have an Lmhosts parameter in the registry and it will have to be created. Taking this step is beyond what most users should attempt. That is why it is necessary to contact a computer professional to help if you are not able to edit or locate the registry key.
