The problem can be related to a number of issues including settings in your PC and bugs in the Windows Live Contact folder. There are a few troubleshooting steps you can use to try and correct the error.

For Windows XP click on Start on the main toolbar and then choose My Computer from the menu. When the new window opens, click on Tools on the toolbar at the top of the window and then choose Folder Options. When the Folder Options window opens, click on View and then choose Advanced Settings. Under Advanced Settings place a check mark in the box next to Show Hidden Files and Folders and remove the check marks from Hide protected operating system files and Hide file extensions for known file types and then click OK.

If you are using Windows Vista click on Start on the main toolbar and then choose My Computer from the menu. When the Explorer window opens choose Organize and then click on Folder and Search Options. When the new window opens choose View and then place a check mark in the box next to Show hidden files and foldersOK. Try to sign in to Windows Messenger again.

If you are still experiencing difficulty you can try deleting the Windows Live Contacts cache folder and then reinstalling it. For Windows XP click on Start on the main toolbar and then choose My Computer from the pop-up menu. Choose the Documents and Settings folder and enter your password if you are prompted to do so. Click on Local Settings and then choose the Application Data folder. Proceed to click on the Microsoft folder and right click on the Windows Live Contacts folder and then choose Delete from the menu.

If you are running Windows Vista click on Start on the main toolbar and then choose My Computer from the menu. Click on C Drive and then choose Users and enter your password when prompted. Click on the Application Data folder and then choose Local. Click on the Microsoft folder and then right click on the Windows Live Contacts folder and choose Delete. Try to sign in to Windows Messenger again.
