What happens

When you enter your email address in the dialog box to sign in to MSN Messenger there is a period of delay before your email address displays on the screen. If you enter your password in the dialog box it displays immediately and then you receive the error code when you press the Enter key.

What you should do in the case of Windows Messenger error #8004888d

The fact that the error message states that MSN is not available could be the case or it could be due to corrupt files that are necessary for running MSN Messenger. There are a few troubleshooting steps you can take to fix the error which include cleaning out the IdentityCRL folder which is a file for Windows Live Sign-in Assistant and re-registering corrupt DLL files which are necessary for running Messenger.

To clean the IdentityCRL folder click on Start on the main toolbar and then choose Run from the menu. If you are using Windows Vista it would be the Start Search box. Proceed to enter %appdata% and then press the Enter key. When the Application Data window opens click on the Microsoft folder and then choose identitycrl. Copy the following files to a secure location: %appdata%\Microsoft\identitycrl\*.* and %allusersprofile%\Application Data\Microsoft\identitycrl\*.* and then delete \Microsoft\Windows Live Contacts\*.*Try to sign in to Windows Messenger again.

To re-register the corrupt DLL files click on Start on the main toolbar and choose Run from the menu (Search boxif you are running Windows Vista). When the Command Prompt appears enter regsvr32 Cryptdlg.dll /s and then press the Enter key. Follow the same procedure for the following dll files: regsvr32 Dssenh.dll /s, regsvr32 Gpkcsp.dll /s,regsvr32 Initpki.dll /s, regsvr32 Msxml3.dll /s, regsvr32 Mssip32.dll /s, regsvr32 Slbcsp.dll /s, regsvr32 Wintrust.dll/s, regsvr32 Sccbase.dll /s, regsvr32 Softpub.dll /s, and regsvr32 Rsaenh.dll /s . Close the Command Prompt and try to sign in to MSN Messenger again.
