If you try to sign in to Windows Live Messenger the error code prevents you from signing in successfully. Windows Live Messenger works fine for a while and the error appears unexpectedly and seemingly without reason.

Error code 80040200 can be caused by a number of issues which include corrupt files in the Windows Live Contact folder or other PC settings. You can begin with the Windows Live Contacts folder.
For Windows XP click on
Start on the main toolbar and then choose
My Computer from the pop-up menu. Choose the
Documents and Settings folder and enter your password if you are prompted to do so. Click on
Local Settings and then choose the
Application Data folder. Proceed to click on the
Microsoft folder and right click on the
Windows Live Contacts folder and then choose
Delete from the menu.
If you are running Windows Vista click on
Start on the main toolbar and then choose
My Computer from the menu. Click on
C Drive and then choose
Users and enter your password when prompted. Click on the
Application Data folder and then choose
Local. Click on the
Microsoft folder and then right click on the
Windows Live Contacts folder and choose
Delete. Try to sign in to Windows Live Messenger again.
You can also try to resolve the error with the Error Repair Tool for Windows Live Messenger. Download the Error Repair Tool from
http://www.fixerrorquick.com/ttfix-windows_live_messenger_80040200_error-zz0001 and install it on your PC. Once you have installed the tool then click on
Repair All button to scan your PC for the error. When the tool is through scanning click the
Repair All icon again and then try to sign in to Windows Live Messenger again.
Also, make sure that the date and time settings are correct on your PC. You can double check the settings by simply clicking on the time in the lower right hand corner of your desktop and then adjust the settings as needed.
