Error code 80040200 can be caused by a number of issues which include corrupt files in the Windows Live Contact folder or other PC settings. You can begin with the Windows Live Contacts folder.

For Windows XP click on Start on the main toolbar and then choose My Computer from the pop-up menu. Choose the Documents and Settings folder and enter your password if you are prompted to do so. Click on Local Settings and then choose the Application Data folder. Proceed to click on the Microsoft folder and right click on the Windows Live Contacts folder and then choose Delete from the menu.

If you are running Windows Vista click on Start on the main toolbar and then choose My Computer from the menu. Click on C Drive and then choose Users and enter your password when prompted. Click on the Application Data folder and then choose Local. Click on the Microsoft folder and then right click on the Windows Live Contacts folder and choose Delete. Try to sign in to Windows Live Messenger again.
