What happens?

When you try to sign in to Windows Live Messenger this error message appears on the screen. It also occurs when you try to establish a new hotmail address after you enter all of your information.

This error usually occurs as the result of the Messenger cache becoming corrupt or incorrect settings in your PC. There are a few troubleshooting steps you can take to try and resolve the issue.

The first method is a fairly easy fix and involves shutting down Messenger programs and the restarting them. Right click on the main toolbar at the bottom of the window on your PC’s desktop and then choose Task Manager from the menu. When the Task Manager window opens click on Processes and then find msnmsgr.exe and wlcomm.exe programs. If the programs are running, click on each program and then choose End Process. Try to sign in to Windows Messenger again.

If you are still receiving the error message the problem may be with settings in Windows Explorer. Click on Start on the main toolbar and then choose Run and enter explorer and then press the Enter key. When the new window opens, click on Tools and then choose Folder Options if you are using Windows XP. If you are running Vista or Windows 7 choose Organize and then click on Folder and Search Options. Click on the View tab and then navigate to Advanced Settings. Scroll down to Hidden Files and Folders and then click on Show hidden files and folders and remove the check mark in the box next to Hide extensions for known file types. Try to sign in to Windows Messenger again.

If you are still having problems with the error, for Windows XP click on Start on the main toolbar and then choose My Computer from the pop-up menu. Choose the Documents and Settings folder and enter your password if you are prompted to do so. Click on Local Settings and then choose the Application Data folder. Proceed to click on the Microsoft folder and right click on the Windows Live Contacts folder and then choose Delete from the menu.

If you are running Windows Vista click on Start on the main toolbar and then choose My Computer from the menu. Click on C Drive and then choose Users and enter your password when prompted. Click on the Application Data folder and then choose Local. Click on the Microsoft folder and then right click on the Windows Live Contacts folder and choose Delete. Try to sign in to Windows Messenger again.
