Windows error code 17 is a standard device driver error. This error can be attributed to either a corrupt driver or an outdated driver. There is a single fix that should resolve each scenario. You may not know right off-hand if the driver on your computer is outdated or corrupt, so a good starting point for resolving this issue is to go to the manufacturer's website. Do a search for your device driver and see if the newest version available was released since you bought your hardware. If it was, you probably need to download the newest version.

To update the driver once you have downloaded the most recent version, do the following:

  • Make sure that you know the path to the file before you begin.
  • Right click on the device in Device Manager to display the Properties dialog box.
  • Click on the Driver tab and choose Update Driver.
  • Follow the directions provided by the Driver Update Wizard.
  • When prompted, browse out to the path of the new driver file that you downloaded from the manufacturer's website.
  • Complete the update.
  • Reboot your computer.

After your computer has started back up, see if the error happens again. If not, you have resolved the issue. Be sure to get the driver file from the manufacturer's website even if it is the same version as the driver you currently have. Doing so will put a fresh copy on your hard drive and will resolve the issue, even if you have a corrupt driver on your hard drive.
