This error message appears when you start Windows XP. It may occur with some Dell computers if the Dell Assistant software is installed, although it may occur with other computers as well. You may see it if the default security provider in Windows XP has changed, or if the system drive letter has changed. It can occur when any software changes the default security provider.

If the problem is with the default security provider being changed, you can reset the default security provider in Windows XP by first deleting all relevant registry keys in the Windows registry. Do this by starting the computer in safe mode—you can start in safe mode by starting the computer and pressing the F8 key during startup. Then, start the Registry Editor, and delete the following registry keys:

If the problem is in the drive letter having been changed, you can reset the drive letter by accessing the Registry Editor, and then changing the drive letter back to its original value.
