Windows Vista may display this error message when you try to install updates. The error message does not state anything except the error code and prevents you from using Windows Update.

This error code is usually caused by HTTP proxy settings which have been altered or are inaccurate. When you try to install updates to Windows Vista the settings interfere with the update process. The problem can be solved by eliminating the current proxy settings.

In Windows Vista click on Start on your main toolbar and then choose Runfrom the pop-up menu and then enter cmd in the Command Prompt box. Click OK to display the current proxy settings. When the Command Prompt box appears enter Proxycfg.exeand then press the Enter key. This process will operate the command and when you are prompted you can delete the current proxy settings by entering Proxycfg –din the Command Prompt and then clicking OKto close the window. Click on Starton your main toolbar again and chooseRunfrom the menu and then enter Services.mscand click OK. This process will perform a check to verify that the Background Intelligent Transfer Service is operating properly. This program oversees file transfers which are used by Windows Update. When the Serviceswindow opens choose Background Intelligent Transfer Servicefrom the list and then check to see if it is running. If the service is running you can proceed to run Windows Updateagain. If the service is not running simply click on Generaland then choose the Startbutton.
