About the Error

When you try to download an update a red X is displayed near the update before you receive the error code. There is no message associated with the code you just receive error code 0x80070003.

Prevent Windows code 80070003 from happening to you.

This error code displays when you try to install an update any three of the Microsoft sources which include the Windows Update website, Update website, and Windows Server Update Services server. If the update fails you will see a red X near the update which results in the error code. The cause of the problem is missing files in the update even when you successfully download and obtain the updates.

You can solve the problem by clicking on Starton your main toolbar and then choosing Run. When the Command Prompt appears type in services.msc and then click OK. Right click on Automatic Updates and then choose Stop. Place the window down on the toolbar. Next you must rename the Soiftware Distribution by clicking on Starton your main toolbar and then choosing Run. When the Command Prompt appears type in cmd and then click OK. When the window appears type in cd %windir% where you see the cursor blinking and then press the Enter key. Proceed to type in ren SoftwareDistribution SDTemp and then press the Enter key. Complete the process by typing in exit and press the Enter key again.

Bring the Automatic Updates window back up on the screen from the toolbar and click on Start then close the window. Revisit one of the three update sites you were using to install updates and then proceed to download the update.
