Home > Windows errors > Permission error code 1401

What happens

This error is caused by not having administrative privileges on the computer being used. Windows Office 2003 and XP have a file which requires administrative privileges to edit this file when it is opened or installed.

Three things you can do when Setup cannot create Registry Key

Method 1 - Consult the network administrator or primary user of that specific computer and ask them to set you up with administrative privileges in your user account. Method 2 - If adding administrative privileges does not work, the file may be corrupted. Re-install the Office software.
