Error code 8000401a appears when you try to sign in to Windows Live Messenger. You can open Windows Messenger however the error does not appear until you try to sign in to the service.

This error can be caused by a broken file in your PC’s registry or by a software inconsistency which can occur in Windows Messenger. There are a few troubleshooting steps you can try to fix the error.

Click on Start on your main toolbar and then choose Run from the menu. When the Command window opens enter regedit to open the Registry Editor and make sure you backup your registry before proceeding. This way you can restore your system in the event you click on something by mistake. That said, when the Registry Editor window opens double click on the HKEY_CLASSES_ROOTfolder and then scroll down the list until you locate the AppIDfolder. Double click on the AppID folder and then search for this entry: 380689D0-AFAA-47E6-B80E-A33436FE3. When you find the entry, right click on it and then choose Delete from the menu. Close the Registry Editor and close Windows Messenger and then reopen Windows Messenger and try to sign in again.
You can also try uninstalling Windows Live Messenger by clicking on Starton your main toolbar and then choosing Control Panelfrom the menu. When the Control Panel window opens click on Add/Remove Programs and locate Windows Messenger in the list and click on Remove. Reinstall Windows Live Messenger and try again.
If you are using the AVG antivirus program you may be getting the error as the result of the MSN protection feature. Try to correct the error by opening the AVG interface and then locate Web Shield and click on it. Choose Instant Messaging and the remove the check mark next to MSN Protection. Close the program and launch Windows Messenger and try to sign in again.
